You’ll learn essential hand tool techniques and basic woodworking skills under expert guidance in a workshop environment here in Weardale, County Durham.
It’s ideal if you’ve never used traditional tools before or you want to start building confidence and competence with using the core set of woodwroking tools.


Build a Cracket Course

2 day course ideal for beginners
A more focused course where participants spend two days learning through building a traditional Cracket stool. This course combines practical tool use while learning to help beginners apply techniques in a real build.
It’s perfect if you want to spend a bit longer getting to grips with hand tool woodworking and end up with a finished piece of furniture to take home.
Dovetail Box Making

Learn how to mark out and cut traditional dovetail joints accurately by hand
This is a more intermediate woodworking course (ideal next step after the beginner workshops) focused on teaching you how to cut and fit hand-cut dovetail joints while you make a traditional keepsake box. Over two consecutive days in the workshop you'll learn to saw and prepare wood and practice refining your sawing, chiselling and planing skills, finishing with a snug fitting lid and a box you can take home.

Japanese style Tool Chest

Based on a traditional Japanese style tool chest, this two day course is designed to help you find beauty in simplicity while honing your accuracy.
Spend two immersive days in the workshop building a tool chest based on traditional designs. Made using simple joinery and hand-driven nails, this hands-on course introduces you the accuracy needed for such a simple looking piece. Precise saw work and pinpoint accurate use of the hand plane are what we focus on to make this deceptively simply tool chest.
1 Day Beginners Carving

Carving is an essential skill in general woodworking as it gives you the oportunity not only to create decorative accent or personalised lettering but also help develop your understanding of grain direction and who it affects your woodworking.
You will learn to carve the basic shapes needed for lettering as well as the principals of carving decorative forms using a basic set of chisels.

Project Course
Our Project course is the perfect follow on to our beginner woodworking course. It allows you to plan and make your own piece of furniture with our guidance and tutelage.

Build your own ANH Artisan Workbench

If you have attended one of our courses, you may well have used one of our hand made pine workbenches. Made using simple joinery techniques and standard timber sizes, this small but mighty workbench is not only a invaluble addition to your own workshop it's also an excellent making experience. Ideal for anyone who has completed on of our beginner hand tool woodwoking courses, this course offers one to one tuition while you make a workbench over 2 consecutive days. All materials are provided all you need to buy is a suitable vice to add to your bench which you can do at a later date.
