Modern handtool woodworking
Develop your skills and create a workspace for woodworking within your home. Develop your hand tool woodworking skills and create a functional home workshop, even in a small space.
What you’ll learn:
The core principles of woodworking
How to set up a safe, efficient small workshop
Which tools matter (and which don’t)
How to work accurately without large machines
Timber basics: selection, preparation, and handling
Foundational hand skills you’ll build on for life
The course consists of 5 days in the workshop run over 7 weeks, and includes:
- 1 introductory day where you will discuss individual tool kits, Planning your work space and setting up your bench and storage requirements, go through workshop equipment plans and learning basic joinery techniques.
- 4 in person maker days (see dates below) at the ANH Artisan workshop where you will build a hallway bench from hardwood (all timber will be provided). As well as in person tuition you will also be provided with cutting lists and plans to make a workbench, saw bench and bench hook as well as a kit list of hand tools to buy.
- Q&A session to support home woodworking and answer any questions that may arise.

Summer Cohort
Introductorty workshop: 27 July 2026
Maker days 1: 17 to 18 August 2026
Maker days 2: 7 to 8 September 2026
Autumn Cohort
Introductorty workshop: 28 September 2026
Maker days 1: Either 19 to 20 October 2026
Maker day 2: Either 9 to 10 November 2026
Due to the planning and preparation involved in providing this course we have a strict cancellation policy as outlined in our terms and conditions. You can cancel your booking and receive a full refund up to 4 weeks before the course starts date. Cancellations within 4 weeks of the course will not be eligible for a refund however, we may be able to transfer your booking to another date subject to availability.
